york, the hustle and bustle of the big apple is slowly coming back after sandy brought the metropolitan hub to a halt. governor cuomo announcing limited train services would start up a day after the city buses were on the road. >> there will be more service literally on a day-by-day basis as the mta is working through this. >> reporter: areas of lower manhattan are flooded with corosive sea water. as people assess the damage in the queen's neighborhood where more than 100 homes were destroyed by a massive fire during the storm. because of the downed power lines, flooding and dangerous debris, the governor postponed halloween and that is far from the minds of the two million or more people without power in the state n. atlantic city, new jersey, craig bosswell, fox news. new york city and parts of the jersey shore, the epicenter of the storm, there are incredible images of destruction and including the video here. the freed metropolis from the eighth avenue section in lower

manhattan. cars tossed about, floating in the water. emergency service lines -- lightings flashing. this is some of the damage left behind in new york. strong winds blew a 40-foot boat on to the train tracks. other boats turned loose slamming into various marineas. and on staten island, police helicopter crews rescued five adults and a child trapped in their homes. the chopper used the rooftop to rescue those. helicopter 23 is the name. named after the 23 officers killed on 9/11. after the storm and the cleanup for some, the focus is on the election. early voting resumed in maryland and d.c. today. and the lines are long. this is what it looked like this morning. early voting is extended in maryland until 9 pom on friday. the d.c. board of elects is extended hours until 9:00 p.m. through saturday. karen gray houston joins us live with more and at this hour, people are patiently waiting in line. karen. >> reporter: they patiently waiting at the bowie public

library, and they're waiting as long as 2, 2 1/2 hours to cast ballots here. and joining me is the prince georges county deputy elections administrator. >> yeah. >> and may be you can explain what is going on here? have the -- the lines been long since saturday? >> they have been. voter turnout is excellent. voters have come out and voting at their vance. they're coming to the lines and patiently waiting their turn to cast their ballots. >> i'm wondering, we have two days off because of the hurricane. >> yes. >> and do you think that is what is driving a lot of what is going now? >> originally on saturday and sunday, we believe many people were coming out. they didn't want to get set not voting in the event there was a power outage. today's turnout, we're pleased with. >> and i'm guessing perhaps

it's the presidential election? >> yes. this is our first time in the state of maryland having early wreath -- voting during a presidential election and this is our first time at it. we had early voting during the gubernatorial election as well. >> people didn't know what to expect because you didn't have early voting and the presidential election before. they were saying i'm surprised, i didn't expect to see this many people in line. >> exactly. >> and they have other important issues on the ballot, same-sex marriage, and gambling in maryland, the dream act. are they talking about -- do you thank is what is on some of their mines? >> i believe that many of them probably are wanting to cast their ballots in reference to some of the very important issues. they received questions and the sample ballots in the mail and specified all of the important

. we continue at 6:00 watching the northeast as it crawls back to normal from hurricane sandy. kennedy at new -- and newark and liberty airports reopened. the new york stock exchange got back to businessed. -- today. the parts are expected to be up and running tomorrow. 6million homes and businesses are without power. the storm is blamed for 60 deaths. hurricane sandy set a massive fire that raged for hours in breezy point, new york,

destroying 80 homes. not just in breezy point but there was destruction across new york, new jersey and cleanup effort is long and costly. fox correspondent theresa priolla reports from rockaway beach. >> reporter: i am theresa pri -- theresa priollo, joining us from rockaway beach. one of the areas devastated by hurricane sandy. this is the atlantic ocean behind me. the boardwalk once lined it. and that boardwalk no longer there. the boardwalk ended up all the way here where you so that truck attempting to remove the sand and push the boardwalk out of the way. pieces of it are there and other pieces are here. across the street and down the block. in fact, that is i light pole there, and past it are street benches and before, we saw a man sitting on one and taking a

moment to reflect. trying desperately to figure out what he is going do now that he has nothing left. the people here are determined to rebuild. they decided that despite the hurricane was a few days ago and this home here, when we got here a few hours ago, you could see all of the way through it and the last few hours, they have boarded it up and have taken any debris needed out of this house and they, like many of the people here in this town, say they will come back bigger and better than ever. all they need now is a city of new york to come to their aid and help them out. they're asking for red cross help, they're asking for fema to come and help them out. and that is the latest from rockaway beach. >> these pictures don't get easier to watch. >> that is rough. and, of course, we have the snow in the mountains, going on for three days now, brian. we have pictures to show you of what is happening at the high elevations to the west.

we know that the ski resorts are happy about this. i think snowshoe mean up and over the three-foot mark, but we also just got a report from one of our e-mailers, robert lefler, camain at west virginia, 3700 feet and may have 32 to 40 inches. you see boone, north carolina, here, and some heavy snow amounts, they're strong get the equipment out and the down side of this area, the heavy, wet snow in the appalachians is that and that is cutting power and phone service to many spots. it mean a number of days, if not a full week before service is back. closer in, frostburg got four inches, in west virginia, grant county, over 22-inches and big meadows, virginia, madson county, 12 inches of snow and elevation-based. we're glad the trick or treaters don't have to deal with the snow. happy halloween, everybody, we're distracted with what is going on with sandy and this is nice for the kids to have fun and forget about the monster

storm. appropriately, we have frightening clouds out there and a ghoulish chill. it will be in the upper 40s as the kid comes around your house and i hope they come tonight. they are going to be dry and it feels damp out there. and lots of layers under the costume and leave the umbrella at home. the temperature now, down to 48 degrees in gaithersburg; d.c., 52; and hagerstown and the higher elevations here, it's in the 40s and that is going to be a chilly night. now, for the most part, clouds are going to hang out with us if these were to clear. it would be colder and this is what is going on with the circulation from sandy and that is very, very weak circulation. it can't move. the high pressure has logjammed everything and we're going have to wait a few more days before we can can get into the sunshine like chicago did and to the south. we'll have more sun tomorrow than we had today and we'll have breaks of sun here and there. we'll also watch the water levels on the rivers and tomorrow should be the last day where we're experiencing some river flooding. we know that the monocacy in

frederick came out of the banks and should be back on the banks now and coastal flood warnings into d.c. for moderate flooding expected through tomorrow afternoon. the crest should be late tonight and so we're going to watch tonight and run above normal tonight by two to three feet. better than it was yesterday, next high tide at the washington channel at 9:54, and alexandrea, 1012time. those of white house live there know the drill. be ready for it and looks like things are better for tomorrow. 42 degrees for us tonight. a little chilly with a good deal of cloud cover around and perhaps some upper 30s for the suburbs. thursday, more sunshine. we'll call it sunny breaks, and 55 degrees. a breeze out of the west to help to dry up some of the leaves that fell and with the sunny breaks, a chilly start in the morning and 42 and some more clouds and sun in the morning. more in the way of insunshine
